Ponder over the events which occur around you and take lesson, for the intelligent one is he who takes lesson.
1.) Allaah Jalla Jalaalahoo makes clear to His servants with an earthquake a plain reality, that the kingdom of the heavens and the earth is in His Control and that He possesses full power over His servants. Some people may be astonished by materialistic objects, from various weapons, aircraft carriers, bombs, satellites etc., and they forget that Allaah has power over all things. Appearance of the earthquakes therefore points us to a different reality that may be absent in the minds of some people, those who are busy with this world and who are servants of materialism.
2.) This earthquake also reminds us to prepare for the Day of Judgment. The Day when all of the Earth will shake, and everything will be destroyed. All a person’s wealth, properties, vehicles, and material goods, which he worked so hard for, will be destroyed. Only a person’s righteous deeds will benefit him.
Rasulullaah SalAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam said, “Qiyaamah will not come until knowledge is taken away, earthquakes are frequent, time passes quickly, trials and afflictions appears, murders and wars becomes commonplace, and your wealth increases to the point of overflowing.” (Bukhaari)
3.) Earthquakes are a wake-up call to remind man to turn back to Allaah Jalla Jalaalahoo and to abandon his life of sin. Allaah Jalla Jalaalahoo states, “Evil and mischief have appeared on land and sea because of what the hands of men have earned, that Allah may make them taste a part of that which they have done, in order that they may return (by repenting to Allah).” (Surah Room)
Whenever there was an earthquake, some of the pious predecessors would say, “Your Lord is warning you.”
When Madinah Munawwarah was struck by an earthquake, Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu addressed the people, saying: "If there is another earthquake, I will not stay here with you.” (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah)
Shahr ibn Hawshab RadhiAllaahu Anhu says, “There was an earthquake in Madinah Munawwarah during the time of Nabi , Rasulullaah SalAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam said, ‘Allaah Jalla Jalaalahoo is asking that you adopt goodness and piety and that you repent, so do so.'” (Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah
Rasulullaah SalAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam said, ‘My Ummah is one that enjoys [Allaah’s] mercy. It will not be punished in the Hereafter. Its [share of] punishment is in the world in the form of trials, earthquakes, and killings.’ (Abu Dawood)
One explanation of this hadith is that some people will be recipients of this mercy, while others will fall under the purport of other ahaadith (that mention punishment in the hereafter).
Abu Hurayrah RadhiAllaahu Anhu narrates that Rasulullaah SalAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam said,
1.) When public money is passed around like own money
2.) Trust is taken as booty (i.e., intention is to use it and refuse to return it)
3.) Zakaat is seen as a tax
4.) Knowledge of Din is acquired for reasons other than spreading the Din
5.) A man obeys his wife and disobeys his mother
6.) He draws his friends close and distances his father
7.) Voices are raised in the masajid
8.) Tribes are led by their wicked
9.) The leader of the community is the most despicable among them
10.) A person is respected for fear of his reprisals
11.) Singing girls and musical instruments become widespread
12.) Intoxicants are consumed
13.) The latter of this Ummah will curse their former,
Then anticipate dangerous hurricanes, earthquakes, collapsing of the earth, disfigurement of bodies and faces, raining of stones, and such signs that follow in succession like beads of a necklace when the string is cut and so they (the beads) fall in succession. (Tirmidhi)
Anas RadhiAllaahu Anhu narrates that he once accompanied another person to visit Ayeshah RadhiAllaahu Anha.
The person said, “O mother of the believers! Tell us something pertaining to earthquakes.”
Ayeshah RadhiAllaahu Anha replied, “When people commit adultery and fornication as though it's permissible, consume intoxicants and play with flutes and musical instruments, at such a time the sense of honour of Allaah comes to the fore and the earth is commanded to shake a little. If they repent and desist (from their evil habits), well and good, otherwise (the demand of such open transgression and rebellion) is that buildings be crushed upon them.”
Upon this, the person asked, “Is this done as a form of punishment and chastisement for them?”
Ayeshah RadhiAllaahu Anha replied, “No, actually it is a mercy and a form of goodness for the believers. As for the disbelievers, it is a punishment, chastisement and unleashing of divine wrath upon them.” (Al-Uqoobaat of Ibn Abid-Dunya
4.) In the suffering of those people, our imaan and charity is tested. When we see a person in pain and in difficulty, we should pay extra attention. It is possible that Allaah is watching to see what our response is. Rasulullaah SalAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam said,
“Show mercy, and you will be shown mercy.” (Musnad Ahmad)
“Whoever does not show mercy will not be shown mercy.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
In a hadithe-qudsi, Rasulullaah SalAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam said,
“Allaah will say on the Day of Judgment, ‘O son of Adam, I was sick, and you did not visit Me.’ He will say, ‘O my Lord, how could I visit You, when you are the Lord of the Worlds.’
Allaah will say, ‘Did you not know that My servant so and so was sick and you did not visit him? Did you not know that if you had visited him, you would have found Me there?’
Allah will say, ‘O son of Adam, I asked you for food and you fed Me not.’
He shall say, ‘O my Lord, how could I feed you and you are the Lord of the Worlds?’
And Allaah will say, ‘Did you not know that My servant so and so was looking for food and you did not feed him? Did you not know that if you had fed him, you would have found that to have been for Me?
O son of Adam, I asked you for water and you did not give Me to drink.’
The man shall say, ‘O my Lord, how could I give You water, when You are the Lord of the Worlds?’
Allaah will say, ‘My servant so and so asked you for water and you did not give him to drink water. Did you not know that if you had given him to drink, you would have found that to have been for Me.’ (Muslim)
It was reported that when there was an earthquake, `Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Azeez Rahimahullaah would write to his governors telling them to give in charity.
