The Love That The Sahaabah Radhiallaahu Anhum Had For Rasulullaah Sallallaahu Alayhi Wasallam
(Continued)

11.) Abdullaah ibn Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu narrates that amongst the captives of the Battle of Badr was Abbaas ibn Abdul Muttalib RadhiAllaahu Anhu. A man from the Ansaar captured him and the other Ansaar threatened to kill him.
Because this news reached Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam, he said, “I was unable to sleep last night because the Ansaar have said that they would kill my uncle Abbaas.”
“Should I go to the Ansaar (and fetch Abbaas)?”
Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu offered. When Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam bade him to do so, he went to them and said, “Release Abbaas.”
“Never,” responded the Ansaar, “we swear by Allaah that we shall never release him.”
“Even if it pleases Rasulullaah?” asked Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu.
The Ansaar immediately acceded saying, “If it pleases Rasulullaah, you may have him.”
Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu took him in his custody and when Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu was with him, Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu said to him, “Accept Islaam, O Abbaas. I swear by Allaah that your accepting Islaam would please me more than (my father) Khattaab accepting Islaam. This is only because I know that your accepting Islaam would please Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam.”
(Al Bidaayah wan Nihaayah vol.3 page 298)

Ibn Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu narrates that Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu said to Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu, “Accept Islaam, by Allaah! Your accepting Islaam is more beloved to me than Khattaab accepting Islaam. The only reason for this is that this action is more beloved to Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam. Therefore, accept Islaam. Your accepting Islaam quicker will be to your benefit.”
(Bazzaar no. 4924)

12.) Sha'bi reports that when Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu was pressurising Umar for something, he said, “O Ameerul Mu'mineen! Tell me. How would you treat the uncle of Moosa Alayhis Salaam if he came to you as a Muslim?”
“By Allaah!” exclaimed Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu, “I would certainly treat him well.”
“Well,” remarked Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu, “I am the uncle of Muhammad, the Nabi.”
Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu then said, “What do you think, O Abu Fadhl (do you think that I have no regard for you)? I swear by Allaah that your father is more beloved to me than my own father.”
“Really, do you swear by Allaah?” Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu staggered.
“Really,” replied Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu, “and that is because I know that Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam liked your father more than my father. I shall give preference to what Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam liked over that which I like.”
(Ibn Sa'd vol. 4 page 27).

13.) Muhammad ibn Ali narrates that Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu once approached Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu saying, “Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam had apportioned the land of Bahrain for me.”
Who else knows about this?” asked Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu.
“Mughiera ibn Shu'bah does,” replied Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu.
Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu then brought Mughiera RadhiAllaahu Anhu, who testified on his behalf. However, Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu did not pass judgement in Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu's favour, apparently not accepting his evidence.
Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu then said some harsh words to Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu, upon which Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu said (to Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu's son), “O Abdullaah! Take your father's hand. O Abul Fadhl (Abbaas RadhiAllaahu Anhu's title) I swear by Allaah that I was happier by your accepting Islaam than if (my father) Khattaab had accepted Islaam, because this pleased Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam.”
(Ibn Sa'd  vol.4 page 16 ).

14.) Abu Sa'eed Khudri RadhiAllaahu Anhu says, “When Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam just arrived in Madinah, it was our practice to inform him whenever a person was about to pass away.
Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam would then present himself and seek forgiveness on behalf of the person. He and those with him would leave only after the person passed away and would sometimes also remain until after the burial. This would often delay Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam because it kept him back.
When we sensed this inconvenience to Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam, some of us said to the others, ‘By Allaah! We ought to inform Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam only after a person passes away so that it would not be inconvenient for him nor keep him back.’

This was then what we did. We informed Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam after the person's death and he would lead the (Janaazah) salaah and seek forgiveness for the person. There were times when he would leave after this (the salaah) while at other times, he would remain behind until after the burial.
This practice continued for a while, after which the people said, ‘By Allaah! We ought to not bother Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam and should rather carry the deceased to Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam's house and then call for him to lead the salaah near his house. This would be more convenient and easier for Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam.’ This was then what we used to do.”
(Mustadrak of Haakim no. 1349, Saheeh ibn Hibbaan no. 3006,  Sunanul Kubra of Bayhaqi no.7181)

Umar ibn Muhammad says that it was from that time that the place was called “Mowda'ul Janaa'iz” (the place for biers), because it was to this place that the biers were carried. It was from those times to this day that the practice continued of people carrying the funeral biers to this place and performing the salaah there.
(Ibn Sa'd vol.1 page 198).

15.) Aslam narrates that Umar RadhiAllaahu Anhu once went to Faatimah RadhiAllaahu Anha, the daughter of Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam and said, "O Faatimah! I have never seen anyone that Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam loved more than you. By Allaah! After your father, there is none dearer to me than yourself." (Mustadrak of Haakim no. 4736)

16.) Anas RadhiAllaahu Anhu narrates, “During the Battle of Uhud, the people left Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam while Abu Talha RadhiAllaahu Anhu was in front of him shielding him with his leather shield. Abu Talha RadhiAllaahu Anhu was a skilful archer who used to shoot powerfully. He broke two or three arrow bows on that day.
If a man carrying a quiver full of arrows passed by, Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam would say (to him), “Scatter its contents for Abu Talha.”

Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam would raise his head to look at the enemy, whereupon Abu Talha would say, “Let my father and mother be sacrificed for you! Do not raise your head, lest an arrow of the enemy should hit you. (Let) my neck (be struck) rather than your neck.”
(Bukhaari no. 3811, 4064, Muslim no. 1811)

Abu Talha RadhiAllaahu Anhu was ready to have himself killed in the defence of Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam.
He therefore kept saying, “O Rasulullaah! I am a strong man, so send me to fulfil any of your needs and give me any command you wish.”
(Musnad Ahmad has this addition no. 14058.)

17.) Zuhri reports that someone once complained to Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam that Abdullaah ibn Hudhaafa RadhiAllaahu Anhu joked a lot and spoke many useless things.
Rasulullaah SallAllaahu Alayhi Wasallam said, “Leave him alone because he has a heart that loves Allaah and His Rasul.”
(Tareekh of Ibn Asaakir vol. 27 page 359)
